Unexpected Guest

Last Thursday I came home from work to find that we had a very unexpected guest... a dog!

Now, Jeff and I have always wanted a dog and we talk about it often. But we have both decided (mostly I have decided) that this is just not the right time. I mean, we ARE going to have a baby in a couple of months!!
Also, we know that we want 'a real dog'... a lab or a retreiver, or something of the like. What I came home to was a rat. (No offence to those who have small dogs! We have nothing against small dogs, really we don't!! They just aren't for us... and the first time I saw this one, well, he looked like a rat.)

ANYWAY! Jeff was on his way home from putting in his police application (yes, that's right! Jeff has applied to the Toronto Police Dept.) and was driving down Thompson Road. Then he saw something in the middle of the road, as he got closer he realized that it was a dog... a very small dog. Jeff pulled over and picked the dog up out of the ditch (where he had run after Jeff pulled over). The dog was so small that it was shivering to death in the cold.
Jeff then proceeded to put the dog in the car, drive to the store, buy a leash, food and treats and bring the dog home. This is when I got home.

Needless to say, Jeff wanted to keep the little guy... who he so lovingly named DUKE! *chuckle, chukle*
Again... NOT the right time. Not only that, we have prenatal classes on Thursday nights, so I asked Jeff what we are going to do with the dog? His response, "We'll just leave him here." For those of you who haven't been to our house... it is very open concept and there are a million places for a dog to get into. Not to mention that they little guy probably couldn't go for three hours without having to go to the bathroom!! I don't think so!!
Luckily we have VERY good friends. Mike and De came over with their dog, Becca, while we were in class. The dogs got along well... but our cat, Dutchie, was still the boss!

The next day Jeff drove Duke to his parent's house as we both had to work. I went after work and picked him up. Saturday morning Jeff and I took Duke to the Oakville Humane Society. I will be the first to admit that I sobbed the second we walked out of there without him. Duke just looked so scared and confused when we handed him to the lady, it broke my heart. But I know it was the right thing to do and that he's better off with a family that can give him the care and attention that he deserves.

Here are a few pictures of the little guy (notice his size compared to our tv stand in the background, which is only 3ft wide!):

And of course Dutchie, watching to make sure Duke behaves:

Thanks again Mike and De and Mum and Dad for your help!!

The Forest Takes Shape

So much has happened in the past few days that I will need to split it all into a few entries. But for now I just want to update on the progress of the nursery.

To quickly recap, last weekend Jeff and I bought all the paint and supplies for the room. Then we proceeded to clean out the room, wash down the walls and tape off the trim and height for the chair rail. Then Jeff painted the tinted primer.

Here is Jeff hard at work:

This is what it looked like when I woke up the next morning (YIKES!):

The next night Jeff did one coat of the red. MUCH better, but still in need of a few more coats:

After that other things got in the way (like I said, a lot has happened) and the nursery took a back seat for the week. But today my wonderfully talented brother came to start the mural. Jeff did another coat of the red while Mike started on the main wall.
Mike didn't exactly get as far as he had originally hoped (he thought he might be able to finish the whole thing), but the progress he has made is WONDERFUL!!
Jeff and I can't wait to see the final product!!!!

Here are some progression shots:

Check out that AMAZING fence!!!

So that's where we stand for now. Jeff will have to do at least one more coat of the red... but we still have plenty of it so no worries there.
I'll be sure to update again next weekend after Mike's back to do more.

Fasting and "Orange Pop"

Hello all!

So I went for my sugar test on Wednesday. The purpose of this test is to test for gestational diabetes. The thing I was most worried about with this test... fasting!! I had to fast for TWELVE hours. Now I know that this really isn't that big of a deal but to put things into perspective... Jeff calls me "The Eating Machine"!! I ALWAYS seem to be hungry! So being told that you cannot eat or drink anything but water for TWELVE hours... Yikes!!

To be honest though, it really wasn't as bad as I was expecting. I sucked it up and stopped eating at 8:30pm the night before (Don't judge me because I eat after dinner! I know you aren't supposed to!!). Unfortunately the clinic I was going to for the test is first come, first serve.
I made it there for approximately 8:45am. It's one of those "take a number and wait" type places... I was number 33... they were only on 21... Joy! Luckily they called the numbers far faster than anywhere else I've ever been with a "take a number and wait" policy.

The test goes like this:

- You are given a 10oz bottle of "orange soda"... I use that term VERY loosely here. Imagine Orange Crush (not bad) with about 100x more syrup (bad). Keep in mind you have to drink this on an empty stomach, first thing in the morning... gag. To top it all off... it was WARM. You'd think that they could keep these things in the fridge to make it slightly more pleasurable. Oh well. I managed to get it all down in the allotted time (5 minutes) even with the burning sensation that accompanied it.

- After you drink the "soda" you have to wait... for an hour! I thought ahead and had a took a book with me. I didn't read much of it though.. I'm a definite people watcher and there were about 25-30 people in the waiting room at all times and there were constantly new people coming in.

- Once your hour is up, they take your blood.

- Test over.

I obviously don't have the test results yet, we do live in Ontario after all!! Hopefully next week at my next OB appointment.

Anywho, Wednesday wasn't all bad (not that the test was really that bad... just unpleasant). That afternoon I had another ultrasound. I LOVE ultrasounds... it is so amazing to be able to see the baby!!

Things are looking good. My cervix is "miles" long according to the doctor... yes, this IS a good thing!! He also mentioned that the baby is measuring long. Jeff says we're going to have a "tall boy... like the beer!" Ha ha

It was confirmed again that we are having a little boy. He is currently sitting with his head up under my ribs and his feet down between my legs (well... it sure feels that way sometimes!!). The doctor thinks that he may still have room to turn but that there is still the chance that he will get stuck with his head up. If that's the case... it means a c-section. So, if you don't mind, send some "baby turning" vibes this way... we DO NOT want a c-section!!

With that I will leave you with a picture of our "tall boy"... it's not the clearest but you can see his profile and his torso really well. And before you ask, I believe it's his hand that is sitting above his tummy... you can sort of see the knuckles.

Enjoy!!

Banished

Okay, so maybe banished isn't exactly the correct term... but it sure feels that way to me.

For those of you who know me well, you know that I can be somewhat of, as my sister so lovingly puts it, a control freak. It's okay... I can admit it, I like to be in control of things. Most of the time this works for me, obviously, but there are times, not very often, that I just need to let go.
What I'm getting at here is the painting of the nursery.

Jeff and I went out tonight and bought all the paint and accoutrement's to paint the nursery. The plan is to paint the bottom half of the room a deep red colour, the top half will remain the colour it already is... builder's 'mocha', which really isn't too bad at all. There will be white chair rail separating the two colours. Then my SUPER talented brother is going to come and paint a mural above the chair rail. So tonight we bought everything we and my brother will need.

I am just SO freaking excited about this project I can barely contain myself!! Well, it turns out that Jeff is just as excited as I am and after we got home, at 9pm, he decided that he was going to start on the nursery. WOO HOO!!
We spent time clearing EVERYTHING out of the room, wiping down the walls, taping off the baseboards and trim (that was my job... fun!) and putting down the drop cloth. Then it happened... I was banished from the room!!!

Okay, okay... I KNOW that I am not supposed to be painting when pregnant. But I really, really want to!! I've heard that it's okay to paint while pregnant if you have the window open... it's minus a gazillion degrees outside, and while this would be fine for me, the human furnace, I don't think Jeff would enjoy painting with a parka on! And really, I know it's not recommended anyway. Even the sales lady at Home Depot asked me not to paint. Apparently the darker the colour, the worse the toxins and fumes... who knew!?

So this is where we are. It's currently 11:33pm, Jeff is priming the room and I am banished to the basement.

We will be sure to take lots of progression shots of the room. Here's what we have so far:

The room all taped off ready to go:

Jeff mixing the primer (check out that Pepto Bismol colour!!!):

And finally I leave you with something I realized tonight that I found rather amusing:

At 16 weeks when the shirt still somewhat fit VS. tonight, at 28 weeks (same shirt, same pants):

I guess my tummy has grown more than I thought!!

Night!

27 Weeks and Counting

So at the urging of some family members, who live out of the country, I have decided to start a 'baby' blog.

Don't get too excited, I'm no writer, like my brother. I often forget to write or just simply can't find the time... But I'm willing to give it a shot and I'm hoping this will suffice for now.

A bit of background:
Jeff and I found out we were expecting on Friday, August 3rd, 2007; the day before we moved into our new house. I was on my second round of fertility drugs and we were ecstatic that they had worked!

It's hard to believe that that was almost 6 months ago!
As of today I am 27 weeks and 3 days pregnant. The official due date is
Sunday, April 13th but it's anyone's guess as to when baby wilkinson will actually make his appearance. I've been told that I could go into labour any day now! Fun!

P.S. Yes, we know it's a boy. The name will remain confidential until he officially comes into the world... so don't even try to get it out of us!! : )

And now I'll leave you with some, always exciting, belly progression pics (12, 20 and 22 weeks)
Enjoy!
